Ethnographic Research at National Skateboarding Festival

Ruth Carney

Over the course of the first year of part-time study, I worked towards a literature review and project plan for data collection. Since June 2016 I have attended LDoc and partner events and workshops to clarify my specific position in the Design Research field.
A key moment as a researcher was my attendance, for ethnographic research purposes, at a national skateboarding festival. This, and ongoing liaison with people involved with (or opposed to) skatepark projects, helps to articulate my thesis. Following a short course in architectural drawing, I have also begun to develop a style of research, which involves conversations focused around visual mapping of the 3-dimensional skatepark space. I look forward to exploring these methods further as I continue my research through more formal data collection.
