Prof. Jane Harris

JH-squareJane Harris is Professor of Digital Design and Innovation and Associate Dean of Research, LCF, UAL

 

Her doctoral study (2000), established novel approaches to digital imaging design and creative computing disciplines, informed by an established textile and material practice. Working with 3D CGI animation and real time tools, encompassing issues of craft and aesthetic, her pioneering imaging work is a hybrid of design, artefact and experience, broadly impacting museum, e-commerce, CGI film /game narratives and design realms.  An experienced PI on UK Research Council awards, Harris has also received Fellowships from the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts (NESTA), the Arts Foundation and awards from the Arts Council of England, the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation and Channel4.

 

An Advisor and Peer Reviewer to the European Commission for ICT (FP7 & Horizon 2020), Harris is also a member of the AHRC Peer Review College.  She has advised the EPSRC, the Arts Councils of England and Scotland, the Crafts Council, Arts Foundation and worked extensively in the UK and international HE sector.

 

Research interests include: digital interpretation of material form, enhancement of visualization experiences using real-time, haptic and augmented reality technology; development of digital design and presentation paradigms pertaining to ‘future’ fashion; code in contemporary design and craft contexts; design of digital methods to examine, interpret and experience cultural heritage in particular surface, textiles, dress and highly crafted environments; identification of digital and ‘real time’ design methods to fashion novel environment and identities for film, games and virtual realms; review and communication of tacit craft knowledge in evolving imaging and interactive technology contexts. Theoretical practice navigates transdisciplinary design, digital design of image, object, moving image, craft and material in digital contexts, CAD CAM, technology and material innovation contexts.
